Key statistics

In the 12 months to June 2026:

  • The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 3.8%, down from 4.0% in the 12 months to May 2026.
  • The largest contributors to annual inflation were Housing (+6.8%), Food and non-alcoholic beverages (+3.3%) and Recreation and culture (+3.3%).
  • Trimmed mean inflation was 3.6%, unchanged from 3.6% in the 12 months to May 2026.

In the month of June, the CPI fell 0.1% in both original terms and seasonally adjusted terms.

Quarterly data available

Quarterly CPI data can be found in tables 17 and 18 in the Data downloads. Data for the most recent quarter will be added to tables 17 and 18 when the monthly CPI is published for the months of March, June, September and December.

Quarterly Trimmed mean

The quarterly Trimmed mean based on pre-October 2025 methods is available in Appendix 1a. More information on the quarterly Trimmed mean is available in Quarterly Trimmed mean explanatory note.

Change to timing of CPI release

Commencing from February 2027, the CPI will be published on the fourth Wednesday of each month, rather than the final Wednesday of each month. Following feedback from users, the ABS conducted a review which determined that an earlier release would have no impact on the quality of the CPI data and would continue to meet the needs of our users. The new dates for the CPI release will be reflected in the ABS release calendar.

Next CPI weight update in January 2027

Earlier in the year it was decided to postpone the 2026 weight update. A mid-2026 update would be considered if household spending patterns had changed sufficiently. The ABS has monitored household spending data and determined a mid-2026 update is not needed. The CPI weights will be updated for January 2027, scheduled for release on 24 February 2027.

Using price indexes

Price indexes in contracts

Price indexes published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) provide summary measures of the movements in various categories of prices over time. They are published primarily for use in Government economic analysis. Price indexes are also often used in contracts by businesses and government to adjust payments and/or charges to take account of changes in categories of prices (Indexation Clauses).

Use of Price Indexes in Contracts sets out a range of issues that should be taken into account by parties considering including an Indexation Clause in a contract using an ABS published price index.

Methodology

Scope

The CPI is a general measure of price change for goods and services purchased by Australian households.

Collection method

Prices are collected monthly using:

  • web-scraping
  • online and telephone collections from retailers
  • administrative data, including supermarket scanner data.

Concepts, sources and methods

Information about the data sources and methods used to compile the CPI is contained in the Consumer Price Index: Concepts, Sources and Methods.
