About this release

Data from the monthly Labour Force Survey are released in two stages:

  1. Labour Force, Australia - which contains headline estimates of employment, unemployment, underemployment, participation and hours worked
  2. Labour Force, Australia, Detailed - which contains detailed data not included in the first release

This second release of Labour Force Survey data includes the latest detailed monthly and quarterly data. Some information, including industry, occupation, job duration, and retrenchment, is only available for February, May, August and November.

As a result, in the 'non-quarter' months, the quarterly spreadsheets and datacubes have a different reference period. For example, the May issue contains May monthly and May quarterly data, while the July issue will contain July monthly and May quarterly data.

For more information on the data contained in the first and second releases, see the Survey output section of the Labour Force Survey Methodology page.

Using regional labour force estimates

Labour force status

In this release, the ABS has introduced improvements to its estimation methods for labour force status by country of birth, published in pivot tables LM4 and LM5.

In addition, pivot table LM7 has been removed as it used classifications no longer used by the ABS.

Further information on the changes to migrant labour force data is available in the Enhancing Estimates for Migrants in the Labour Force Survey article published alongside this release.

Industry and Occupation

The Labour Account is the best source of quarterly industry and sector data. For information on how it provides a better allocation of employed people and their hours based on the characteristics of their employing business, see Industry employment guide

The ABS is currently reviewing the usefulness of the market and non-market sector data in Table 21 of the headline Labour Force release.

Data files

The ABS will cease publishing direct survey estimates tables for labour market regions (SA4) in the November release of Labour Force, Australia, Detailed on 18 December 2025. This includes tables 16, 16b, 16c, RM1, RM3, RQ1 and RQ2. This follows the release of new age and sex breakdowns for the modelled regional labour force estimates in the June 2025 issue of Labour Force, Australia, Detailed.

The ABS recommends using the modelled estimates in MRM1 and MRM2 whenever possible in reporting on data at the SA4 level, and recommends using the direct survey estimates when reporting on state/territory level data. For data items without modelled estimates available in MRM1 and MRM2 (i.e. tables 16c, RM3, RQ1, RQ2), direct survey estimates will continue to be available in the LFS TableBuilder product.

Post release changes

23/10/2025 - Tables 14e, FM1, FM2, FM3 and FM4 have been updated for August 2025 data to correct discrepancies in coding the relationship in household category. No other months or data items are affected.

02/10/2025 - LM3a, LM9 and RM3 have been updated to include missing months (July 2022 - April 2023). There are no impacts on published data in these tables. This occurred as a result of extended population rebenchmarking to July 2022. The monthly pivots zip file has been reloaded with the updated LM3a, LM9 and RM3.

26/09/2025 - Due to an annual average estimate calculation inconsistency, the estimates for quarters August 2022 to February 2023 have been updated in RQ1 and RQ2. There is no impact on headline Labour Force estimates. The quarterly pivots zip file has been reloaded with the updated RQ1 and RQ2.
