SPIRITS AND READY TO DRINK (PRE-MIXED) BEVERAGES

Between 2015-16 and 2016-17, the quantity of pure alcohol available from spirits excluding ready to drink beverages (RTDs) was virtually unchanged at 24.3 million litres. The quantity of pure alcohol available for consumption in the form of RTDs decreased by 0.7% during this period, from 11.3 million litres to 11.2 million litres, continuing the downward trend seen over the last decade. In fact, pure alcohol in the form of RTDs has dropped 40% since the 2007-08 high of 18.7 million litres.

In per capita terms, consumption of alcohol from total spirits and RTDs fell from 1.95 litres to 1.80 litres (or 7.8%) over the five years to 2016-17. However, that fall in consumption can be seen to have all occurred by 2014-15 — largely due to the RTDs component which fell 16% in the three years to 2014-15 and remained steady (at around 0.57 litres per capita) since then. Per capita consumption of spirits (excluding the RTDs) also declined over the 5 years to 2016-17 (down 2.4% overall) although the annual levels have tended to fluctuate year to year.
