All arrivals - provisional estimates monthly

Provisional statistics on international travel movements of persons arriving in Australia. It is the number of international border crossings rather than the number of people.


Key statistics

All overseas arrivals to Australia in August 2020 (provisional estimates):

• 15,400 estimated trips, 8,800 of these are Australian citizens
• 15.5% decrease compared to the previous month and a 99.1% decrease compared to the corresponding month of the previous year
• 7.3% of all arrivals were New Zealand citizens, the largest group apart from Australian citizens returning home
• 9.1% of all arrivals were those arriving on temporary other visas.

All arrivals - by citizenship

The five largest countries of citizenship (excluding Australian) for all arrivals to Australia in August 2020 were:

• New Zealand (1,100), decreasing 26.6% compared to the previous month
• UK (640), increasing 0.8%
• China (630), increasing 1.8%
• India (620), increasing 28.0%
• USA (530), decreasing 4.0%.

• Temporary other visas (1,400), decreasing 18.5% compared to the previous month
• Permanent skilled visas (940), decreasing 8.9%
• Temporary visitor visas (910), increasing 1.4%.

All international travellers must be processed and cleared by Australia's Border Force via specific seaports or airports around the country. This information provides the state or territory of clearance for each traveller.

For August 2020 when comparing to the previous month, increases were recorded for:

• SA (197.3%)
• VIC (169.2%)

Decreases were recorded for:

• ACT (66.7%)
• NT (50.5%)
• QLD (30.9%)
• WA (25.8%)
• NSW (13.9%)
