What are the Producer Price Indexes?

Final Demand

Final demand increased by 0.4% this quarter, and by 3.0% over the year to March quarter 2026. This is the weakest quarterly growth since March 2021 (+0.4%).

Growth was primarily driven by the Construction and Services industries, due to ongoing demand for residential property. Although a main driver this quarter, prices growth within most Services industries was lower compared to the same quarter last year.

Appreciation of the Australian dollar also moderated price pressures across several industries, most notably Manufacturing.

Notable contributors to quarterly growth in Final demand were:

  • Property operators (+1.0%), due to high demand and rising rents for residential properties. While high rents have led to ongoing strength in this industry, the quarterly index increases have been stable over the last year.
  • Petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (+10.1%), due to increased oil prices driven by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz in the latter part of March quarter 2026.
  • Tertiary education services (+2.2%), due to fees being adjusted on an annual basis with rises typically seen in the March quarter.

Offsetting some of the rise was a fall in Air and space transport (-4.0%), attributed to a seasonal drop in air passenger travel following the peak holiday period.

Using price indexes

Price indexes in contracts

Price indexes published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) provide summary measures of the movements in various categories of prices over time. They are published primarily for use in government economic analysis. Price indexes are also often used in contracts by businesses and government to adjust payments and/or charges to take account of changes in categories of prices (Indexation Clauses).

Use of Price Indexes in Contracts sets out a range of issues that should be taken into account by parties considering including an Indexation Clause in a contract using an ABS published price index.
