About this release

Data from the monthly Labour Force Survey are released in two stages:

  1. Labour Force, Australia - which contains headline estimates of employment, unemployment, underemployment, participation and hours worked
  2. Labour Force, Australia, Detailed - which contains detailed data not included in the first release

This second release of Labour Force Survey data includes the latest detailed monthly and quarterly data. Some information, including industry, occupation, job duration, and retrenchment, is only available for February, May, August and November.

As a result, in the 'non-quarter' months, the quarterly spreadsheets and datacubes have a different reference period. For example, the May issue contains May monthly and May quarterly data, while the July issue will contain July monthly and May quarterly data.

For more information on the data contained in the first and second releases, see the Survey output section of the Labour Force Survey Methodology page.

Industry and Occupation

The Labour Account is the best source of quarterly industry and sector data. For information on how it provides a better allocation of employed people and their hours based on the characteristics of their employing business, see Industry employment guide

The ABS is currently reviewing the usefulness of the market and non-market sector data in Table 21 of the headline Labour Force release.

The ABS has ceased publishing direct survey estimates tables for labour market regions (SA4) from the November release of Labour Force, Australia, Detailed onwards. This includes tables 16, 16b, 16c, RM1, RM3, RQ1 and RQ2. This follows the release of new age and sex breakdowns for the modelled regional labour force estimates in the June 2025 issue of Labour Force, Australia, Detailed.

For further information on the methodology used to model these estimates and advise on how to interpret this data, see the Collection method section of the Labour Force Survey Methodology page and the Regional labour market data guide.

For data items not available in MRM1 and MRM2, direct survey estimates will continue to be available in the LFS TableBuilder product.
