Overseas born composition of family (OBCFF)

This variable describes the make-up of a family and shows whether the family members were born overseas or in Australia. 

Families in family households 

This variable is derived from birthplace information of every person in a family. It uses two main variable inputs:  

• Overseas born indicator (OBIP) 
• Family composition (FMCF) 

OBIP identifies whether a person was born in Australia, born overseas, or did not state their country of birth. Families are classified according to whether all members were born overseas, all were born in Australia, a mix of Australian and overseas born members, or whether one or more members did not state a birthplace.  

This is a new variable for the 2026 Census.
