In which country was the person born?

How this variable is created

This variable is derived from the country of birth of person (BPLP) variable.

BPLP responses are coded using the Standard Australian Classification of Countries (SACC)

BPLP responses are coded to this variable so that the categories are:

  • ‘Person born in Australia’ - includes Australia and its external territories.
  • ‘Person born outside Australia’ - includes all other countries.
  • ‘Inadequately described’ - includes responses coded as ‘Inadequately described’ or ‘At sea’.
  • ‘Not stated’ - mirrors ‘Not stated’ responses in BPLP.

History and changes

This is a new variable for the 2026 Census.
