What are the Producer Price Indexes?

A full reweight of all Producer Price Indexes (PPIs) will be published in September quarter 2026, consisting of an update to the weights of all published indexes, in line with the 2023/24 Australian National Accounts: Input-Output tables. Weights represent the structure of the Australian economy and determine which prices have the greatest contribution to the PPIs.

Final Demand

Final demand rose 1.3% this quarter and 3.6% throughout the year to June quarter 2026.

After moderating growth in previous quarters, the index was driven by increased energy prices, particularly for crude oil, petrol, and diesel. These increases were linked to supply disruptions resulting from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz for much of the June quarter 2026. The impacts of the Middle East crisis were felt across most industries with shipping delays adding to the cost of imported goods, while higher fuel costs increased expenses for energy-intensive manufacturing processes. Together, these factors contributed to the largest quarterly increase in Final demand since September 2023.

In addition, continued demand for rental properties remained a key contributor to rises within Final demand, in line with recent quarters.

The main contributors to quarterly growth in Final demand were:

  • Petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (+37.5%), due to increased oil prices driven by restricted oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz since the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East in late February 2026.
  • Property operators (+1.0%), due to high demand and rising rents for residential properties. While high rents have led to ongoing strength in this industry, the quarterly increases have been stable over the last year.
  • Heavy and civil construction (+2.3%), driven by rises in freight and product costs, related to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz for a large part of the quarter.

Offsetting some of the rises were Accommodation services (-12.3%), attributed to a seasonal decline in demand for short term accommodation during the winter months.

Using price indexes

Price indexes in contracts

Price indexes published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) provide summary measures of the movements in various categories of prices over time. They are published primarily for use in government economic analysis. Price indexes are also often used in contracts by businesses and government to adjust payments and/or charges to take account of changes in categories of prices (Indexation Clauses).

Use of Price Indexes in Contracts sets out a range of issues that should be taken into account by parties considering including an Indexation Clause in a contract using an ABS published price index.

Source

Prices for a range of goods and services are collected from a sample of businesses undertaking economic activity in Australia, and supplemented by using internal ABS data sources and publicly available administrative data
