The Managed Funds industry as at 30 June 2020 had $3,816.9b funds under management. This comprised of:

*Resident investment managers placements with other resident investment managers are deducted when deriving the size of the total managed funds industry
 

Superannuation (pension) funds

Total unconsolidated assets of superannuation funds rose $106.1b (3.8%) to $2,914.9b during the June quarter.

Key movements were as follows:

  • units in trusts rose $94.5b (9.8%)
  • shares rose $68.9b (18.6%)
  • net equity of pension funds in life office reserves fell $56.9b (-74.5%)
  • short term securities rose $8.0b (14.9%)
  • assets overseas fell $6.7b (-1.3%)
  • other financial assets fell $5.2b (-2.3%)
     

Public offer (retail) unit trusts

Total unconsolidated assets of public offer (retail) trusts rose $6.2b (1.5%) to $409.4b during the June quarter.

Key movements were as follows:

  • shares rose $6.4b (20.8%)
  • land, buildings and equipment fell $6.0b (-4.1%)
  • units in trusts rose $5.5b (6.0%)
  • assets overseas rose $1.6b (2.7%)
  • loans and placements fell $1.6b (-5.1%)
     

Cross investment within public offer (retail) unit trusts rose $1.5b (4.1%) to $36.8b

Life insurance

Total unconsolidated assets of life insurance corporations fell $60.7b (-32.4%) to $126.5b during the June quarter.

Key movements were as follows:

  • units in trusts fell $57.1b (-58.0%)
  • shares fell $2.8b (-15.5%)
  • loans and placements fell $1.6b (-24.8%)
  • deposits fell $1.6b (-22.8%)
  • bonds rose $1.3b (4.9%)
     

All other managed funds institutions

Total unconsolidated assets of:

  • friendly societies rose $0.4b (4.9%) to $7.7b
  • common funds rose $0.4b (3.9%) to $10.8b
  • cash management trusts rose $1.5b (3.4%) to $44.5b
