Survey of Producer Prices

The Survey of Producer Prices collects pricing information about the products and services created in Australia. It asks each provider to identify key products or services produced by their business and provide the pricing information for these exact products at a point in time over a period of time. It will also ask for the factors behind any price changes of these products and services. 

The specifications of the individual products collected are determined in consultation with each provider so that the change in price of these products can be measured from one period to the next. In most instances actual prices will be collected.

The principal purpose of the Survey of Producer Prices is to measure inflation of products and services, and imports and exports, by industry, to support the compilation of the Australian National Accounts and Balance of Payments. It also supports inflation monitoring and analysis of the Australian economy.

Statistics are published quarterly in Producer Price Indexes, Australia and International Trade Price Indexes, Australia.

The Survey of Producer Prices surveys a selection of businesses across the Australian economy, based on the importance of their products and services to the Australian economy. This ensures an accurate and comprehensive representation of the entire Australian economy. 

Each quarter, we will send you correspondence with a code to access the latest quarter’s survey form(s).  The easiest and quickest way to complete your survey is online using your ABS survey account. The same account can be used to access and answer future surveys.

This form is specific to your organisation and will contain the selection of products and services you have been asked to report on. You will be able to complete this form or delegate someone else to complete it on behalf of your organisation. Upon final submission of a form you will not be able to revisit your answers so it is recommended to save a copy of your data before submission. 

The Survey of Producer Prices measures the change in the cost of production of products and services created Australia over time. The length of time that a business is selected to complete the Survey of Producer Prices will depend on the importance of their products and services to the Australian economy. 

Businesses will be asked to complete the survey once a quarter or once a month. The frequency with which you are requested to provide information will be influenced by the frequency with which the cost of production changes within your business. This frequency allows us to accurately measure these changes in cost over time and over the part of the economy you represent. 

The industry, business and government users of survey statistics need the most accurate and timely information possible so they can make important decisions, so we require your information to be as accurate as possible. 

Prices reported should correspond to real transactions. If products or services have not been transacted during the period please include a comment on the form. When completing your form, if exact figures are not available, please provide careful estimates.

Yes. The questions included in this survey are being asked under the authority of the Census and Statistics Act 1905, which has provisions to make surveys compulsory. Under the Act, you are obliged to provide the information being requested. All the information you provide will remain strictly confidential.

We follow up on delayed responses and we will assist you if you are having difficulties. 

No. There is no provision within the Census & Statistics Act 1905 to reimburse businesses for the cost of providing statistical information. It is only with the support of people like you that we can continue to produce the statistics that inform Australia's important decisions.

Due to strict privacy policy guidelines protecting the information submitted by our data providers, we create new survey forms every quarter that do not contain previously submitted data. We recommend keeping a copy of your completed form prior to submission so that you have a copy for your records.

The ABS takes the privacy and security of your information very seriously.

We use your survey responses to produce statistics, which we release as summary data that does not identify any business or organisation. In some cases, detailed statistics might relate to a single holding. If you are concerned your holding could be identified, you can ask us to further aggregate your data.

We provide statistics free of charge on our website. The statistics produced from the Survey of Producer Prices are published quarterly in Producer Price Indexes, Australia and International Trade Price Indexes, Australia.

For this survey, you should have received a letter with a Form Access Code to access your survey form online. Set up, or log in to your secure ABS Survey Account and add your Form Access Code to access the survey form.
