sexual identity, which is how someone thinks about their own sexuality and the words they use to describe it
attraction, which is romantic or sexual interest in another person
The 2026 Census sexual orientation question was not intended to collect information on sexual behaviour.
A person’s response to a sexual orientation question is their own subjective view of themselves. This view can change over the course of their lifetime and in different situations.

How this variable is created
This variable is based on responses to the sexual orientation question on the Census form. Responses are captured automatically from mark boxes, reducing processing errors. The question also includes a free text field. Free text responses are generally coded automatically using a classification index developed in consultation with LGBTQ+ community members. Manual coding processes are used where automatic coding cannot be applied.
