Definition

This variable records each person’s age in five year groups. Infants under one year are recorded as zero years old and appear in the ‘0-4 years’ category.

Age is also available in single years from 0 to 115 in age (AGEP) and in ten year groups (age in 10 year groups (AGE10P)).

What is the person’s date of birth and age?

How this variable is created

Age is calculated from the date of birth when provided; otherwise, the stated age is used. If both are given, date of birth is used to calculate age unless errors are identified. Age is recorded in whole years only.

If a respondent does not provide age information, it is imputed using other form responses and population age distributions. Imputation is also applied when reported ages fall outside the acceptable range or conflict with other data, such as relationship information.

History and changes

A question on age has been asked in every Census since 1911. From 2006, people could report either their date of birth or their age in years.

In 2021, the question and response options were updated to request both date of birth and age. The online form was redesigned to collect date of birth first, with a checkbox for when it is not known. This change improved the accuracy of age data.

There have been no changes in the 2026 Census.
