This variable shows whether a person has been told by a doctor or nurse that they have dementia, including Alzheimer’s. It does not show whether the person has more than one longterm health condition.

This variable is based on responses to the long-term health conditions question and counts the number of people who selected 'Dementia (including Alzheimer’s)'.

History and changes

This variable was first collected in 2021. 

In 2026 the ‘Does not have dementia (including Alzheimer's)’ category code was changed to 000.
