In the 2016 Census, there were 5,625 people in Dubbo Region. Of these 51.7% were male and 48.3% were female. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people made up 6.0% of the population.

The median age of people in Dubbo Region was 42 years. Children aged 0 - 14 years made up 21.1% of the population and people aged 65 years and over made up 15.8% of the population.

Of people in Dubbo Region aged 15 years and over, 60.0% were married and 10.0% were either divorced or separated.

In Dubbo Region, of people aged 15 years and over, 60.4% of people were in a registered marriage and 8.6% were in a de facto marriage.

In Dubbo Region 32.5% of people were attending an educational institution. Of these, 30.2% were in primary school, 19.8% in secondary school and 12.5% in a tertiary or technical institution.

Of people aged 15 and over in Dubbo Region, 10.3% reported having completed Year 12 as their highest level of educational attainment, 22.3% had completed a Certificate III or IV and 7.8% had completed an Advanced Diploma or Diploma.

Cultural & language diversity

The most common ancestries in Dubbo Region were Australian 37.3%, English 30.3%, Irish 8.9%, Scottish 7.6% and German 2.5%.

In Dubbo Region 90.6% of people only spoke English at home. Other languages spoken at home included German 0.2%, Filipino 0.1%, Arabic 0.1%, Afrikaans 0.1% and Greek 0.1%.

Employment

There were 2,895 people who reported being in the labour force in the week before Census night in Dubbo Region. Of these 63.4% were employed full time, 27.1% were employed part-time and 3.7% were unemployed.

Of employed people in Dubbo Region, 9.5% worked 1 to 15 hours, 8.5% worked 16 to 24 hours and 48.9% worked 40 hours or more.

The most common occupations in Dubbo Region included Managers 21.5%, Professionals 16.0%, Technicians and Trades Workers 15.9%, Clerical and Administrative Workers 13.5%, Labourers 8.5%, Community and Personal Service Workers 8.4%, Sales Workers 8.4% and Machinery Operators and Drivers 6.1%.

Of the employed people in Dubbo Region, the most common responses for industry of employment included Hospitals (except Psychiatric Hospitals) 4.0%, Beef Cattle Farming (Specialised) 3.5%, Sheep Farming (Specialised) 2.7%, Primary Education 2.6% and Road Freight Transport 2.2%.

The median weekly personal income for people aged 15 years and over in Dubbo Region was $687.

In Dubbo Region, on the day of the Census, the most common methods of travel to work for employed people included Car, as driver 68.6%, Worked at home 11.0%, Car, as passenger 3.0%, Truck 2.1% and Walked only 2.1%. On the day, 0.5% of employed people used public transport (train, bus, ferry, tram/light rail) as at least one of their methods of travel to work and 72.1% used car (either as driver or as passenger).

In Dubbo Region, of people aged 15 years and over, 73.7% did unpaid domestic work in the week before the Census. During the two weeks before the Census, 30.1% provided care for children and 13.6% assisted family members or others due to a disability, long term illness or problems related to old age. In the year before the Census, 26.9% of people did voluntary work through an organisation or a group.

Of people who did unpaid domestic work in the week before the Census in Dubbo Region, 27.1% worked 5 to 14 hours, 15.0% worked 15 to 29 hours and 13.1% worked 30 hours or more.

Family composition

Of the families in Dubbo Region, 46.8% were couple families with children, 42.2% were couple families without children and 10.3% were one parent families.

Employment status of couple families
