Building work done
- The trend estimate of the value of total building work done fell 1.9% in the June quarter.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate of the value of total building work done fell 5.5% to $28,749.0m following a rise of 1.0% in the March quarter.
New residential building work done
- The trend estimate of the value of new residential building work done fell 2.5% in the June quarter. The value of work done on new houses fell 1.7%, while new other residential building fell 3.5%.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate of the value of new residential building work done fell 4.7% to $16,097.2m. Work done on new houses fell 4.7% to $8,682.9m, while new other residential building fell 4.7% to $7,414.3m.
Non-residential work done
- The trend estimate of the value of non-residential building work done fell 0.6% in the June quarter.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate of the value of non-residential building work done in the quarter fell 7.2% following a rise of 4.9% in the March quarter.

Total dwellings
- The trend estimate for the total number of dwelling units commenced fell 4.5% in the June quarter following a fall of 6.4% in the March quarter.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate for the total number of dwelling units commenced rose 1.1% to 46,315 dwellings in the June quarter following a fall of 6.4% in the March quarter.
New private sector houses
- The trend estimate for new private sector house commencements fell 3.7% in the June quarter following a fall of 3.4% in the March quarter.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate for new private sector house commencements fell 10.5% to 25,513 dwellings in the June quarter following a rise of 4.4% in the March quarter.
New private sector other residential building
- The trend estimate for new private sector other residential building commencements fell 5.3% in the June quarter following a fall of 10.4% in the March quarter.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate for new private sector other residential building rose 19.9% to 20,000 dwellings in the June quarter following a fall of 18.2% in the March quarter.

This publication updates the preliminary estimates released in
Construction Work Done, Australia (cat. no. 8755.0) on 28 August 2019. The data in this publication are based on a response rate of approximately 90% of the value of building work done during the quarter. The data are subject to revision when returns from the following quarter are processed. Final data for the June quarter 2019 will be released in the next release of this publication,
Building Activity, Australia (cat. no. 8752.0) on 15 January 2020.
Significant revisions this issue
Compared to the estimate published in
Building Activity, Australia March quarter 2019 (cat. no. 8752.0) released on 10 July 2019:
- the total value of work done in Australia during the March 2019 quarter has been revised upwards by $617.7m or 2.1%.
- the total value of work commenced in Australia during the March 2019 quarter has been revised upwards by $575.7m or 2.2%. This was driven by a 10.1% ($926.1m) upwards revision to total non-residential commencements. Total residential commencements were revised downwards 2.1% ($350.5m).
- the number of dwelling unit commencements in the March 2019 quarter has been revised downwards by 784 dwellings or 1.8%.
Data note
Several time series spreadsheets contain 'np' (not available for publication) annotations from the September quarter 2012 onwards. This is due to confidential data being contained in these series.
