Building and construction

In the September quarter:

• Seasonally adjusted work done rose 3.3%.
• Seasonally adjusted work done for the private sector rose 1.4%.
• Value of work commenced rose 13.6% in original terms.
• Trend work done rose 1.1%.

The November 2024 seasonally adjusted estimate: 

• Total dwellings approved fell 3.6%, to 14,998.
• Private sector houses fell 1.7%, to 9,028, while private sector dwellings excluding houses fell 10.8%, to 5,285.
• The value of total residential building fell 0.5%, to $8.36b.
• The value of non-residential building rose 18.4%, to $5.96b.

In seasonally adjusted terms in the September quarter:

• Total construction work done rose 1.6% to $73,344.9m
• Building work done rose 0.7% to $38,638.0m
• Engineering work done rose 2.6% to $34,706.9m

The trend estimate for total construction work done rose 0.7%.

In seasonally adjusted terms:

• The total number of dwelling units commenced fell 1.1% to 40,293 dwellings.
• New private sector house commencements rose 1.7% to 25,732 dwellings.
• New private sector other residential commencements fell 7.4% to 13,756 dwellings.
• The value of total building work done fell 0.2% to $34.0b.

• Australia’s dwelling stock was 10,879,349 dwellings at 30 June 2022.

• The net quarterly growth was 38,535 dwellings (0.4%), comprising 45,522 dwelling additions and 6,987 dwelling removals.

• The net quarterly growth of houses, townhouses and apartments was 23,456 (0.3%), 6,713 (0.5%) and 8,361 (0.5%) respectively. 

• 80.6% of in-scope land parcels were zoned residential, with 600 - 800 square metres the most common size
• 59.5% of new dwellings in-scope were approved for land zoned residential, with 200 - 400 square metres the most common area per dwelling
