Australian Census Longitudinal Dataset (ACLD)

The Australian Census Longitudinal Dataset (ACLD) uses data from the three most recent Censuses to create a research tool for exploring how Australian society is changing over time.

The 2011-2016 ACLD brings together a representative five per cent sample from the 2011 Census with corresponding records from the 2016 Census, producing a dataset with over 1.2 million records. Similarly, the 2006-2011 ACLD brings together a five per cent sample - approximately 1 million records - from the 2006 Census with corresponding records from the 2011 Census. In March 2019, the three wave ACLD was released which brings together a five per cent sample from the 2006 Census with corresponding records from the 2011 and 2016 Censuses.

The ACLD adds value to Census data by providing insights into the pathways that lead to particular outcomes, and how these pathways vary for different population groups.

The ABS is responsible for securely combining the data, and providing approved researchers and analysts access via highly secure ABS systems, safeguarding privacy and confidentiality to ensure that no individual person can be identified.

The ACLD is available to registered users in TableBuilder as a charged product and users can create their own customised tables.

Researchers have made extensive use of the ACLD TableBuilder since the release of the 2006-2011 file, with over 8,000 registered users.

In addition, the ACLD is available in the ABS DataLab as a detailed microdata product that enables approved researchers to unlock the full power of the longitudinal Census file, using a range of statistical software.

Microdata: Australian Census Longitudinal Dataset (cat. no. 2080.0) contains information about registration, pricing and access to the ACLD, as well as details about data items contained in the dataset. Purchasing and access is through How to Apply for Microdata. Please note that ACLD is accessed using the standard ABS TableBuilder login (not Census TableBuilder Basic and Pro login).

The Australians' journeys through life: Stories from the Australian Census Longitudinal Dataset (cat. no. 2081.0) comprises short articles, infographics, interactive maps, and aggregate data presented in Excel tables which demonstrate the potential of the type and range of information in the ACLD.

The Information Paper: Australian Census Longitudinal Dataset, Methodology and Quality Assessment (cat. no. 2080.5) contains detailed information about the sampling and linking methodologies, and linkage results.
