In seasonally adjusted terms:

• The total number of dwelling units commenced rose 6.6% to 48,778 dwellings.
• New private sector house commencements rose 6.9% to 28,485 dwellings.
• New private sector other residential commencements rose 3.5% to 18,747 dwellings.
• The value of total building work done rose 3.8% to $43.2b.

The January 2026 seasonally adjusted estimate: 

• Total dwellings approved fell 7.2% to 14,564
• Private sector dwellings excluding houses fell 24.5% to 4,393 and private sector houses rose 1.1% to 9,753.
• The value of total residential building fell 1.2% to $9.48b.
• The value of total non-residential building rose 19.1% to $8.24b. 

Provides final estimates of value of construction work done, in chain volume measures

In seasonally adjusted terms in the December quarter:

• Total construction work done fell 0.1% to $80,011.8m
• Building work done rose 0.9% to $44,103.4m
• Engineering work done fell 1.3% to $35,908.4m

The trend estimate for total construction work done rose 1.5% to $80,220.4m.

In the September quarter:

• Seasonally adjusted work done fell 6.6%.
• Seasonally adjusted work done for the private sector fell 14.2%.
• Value of work commenced decreased 24.3% in original terms.
• Trend work done decreased 0.8%.

• Australia’s dwelling stock was 10,879,349 dwellings at 30 June 2022.

• The net quarterly growth was 38,535 dwellings (0.4%), comprising 45,522 dwelling additions and 6,987 dwelling removals.

• The net quarterly growth of houses, townhouses and apartments was 23,456 (0.3%), 6,713 (0.5%) and 8,361 (0.5%) respectively. 

• 80.6% of in-scope land parcels were zoned residential, with 600 - 800 square metres the most common size
• 59.5% of new dwellings in-scope were approved for land zoned residential, with 200 - 400 square metres the most common area per dwelling
