Key statistics

  • Australia’s dwelling stock was 10,879,349 dwellings at 30 June 2022.

  • The net quarterly growth was 38,535 dwellings (0.4%), comprising 45,522 dwelling additions and 6,987 dwelling removals.

  • The net quarterly growth of houses, townhouses and apartments was 23,456 (0.3%), 6,713 (0.5%) and 8,361 (0.5%) respectively. 

This publication provides quarterly estimates of Australia's dwelling stock from the June 2016 quarter to the June 2022 quarter based to the 2021 Census of Population and Housing.

Development funding for these statistics was provided through the National Housing and Homelessness Agreement. Development funding ended in 2021-22. Ongoing quarterly estimates of dwelling stock are not funded.

National

In the year ending 30 June 2022, Australia's dwelling stock grew by 146,931 dwellings (1.4%).

a. Annual growth calculated at the end of each quarter

In the June 2022 quarter, the net growth was 38,535 dwellings (0.4%). The growth of houses, townhouses and apartments was 23,456 (0.3%), 6,713 (0.5%) and 8,361 (0.5%) respectively.

Note that growth by type of building does not sum to total dwelling growth as this includes dwellings in non-residential buildings. See the methodology for further information.

In the June 2022 quarter, the number of dwelling additions:

  • was 45,522 dwellings.
  • increased by 8,486 dwellings since the previous quarter.
  • was made up of 30,200 houses, 6,856 townhouses and 8,461 apartments.

 

In the June 2022 quarter, the number of dwelling removals:

  • was 6,987 dwellings.
  • increased by 566 dwellings since the previous quarter.
  • was made up of 6,744 houses, 143 townhouses and 100 apartments.

In the June 2022 quarter, the Australian Capital Territory had the highest dwelling growth rate (0.7%), followed by Victoria (0.4%) and Queensland (0.4%). Northern Territory had the lowest growth rate (0.1%). Queensland recorded the highest growth rate for houses, with 0.4% added to the state's stock of houses. The Australian Capital Territory had the highest growth rates for townhouses (0.8%) and apartments (1.9%).
