About the National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey

The National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey (NNPAS) 2023 was conducted from January 2023 to March 2024. This survey was designed to collect information about nutritional intakes (including foods, nutrients and supplements consumed) using dietary recall and self-reported questions. Physical and sedentary activity information was collected using a combination of measured and self-reported data.

Brief information about key statistics available from the NNPAS can be found on this page. To find more detailed information on a topic of interest, a link has also been provided to the individual topic page.

Nutrition

Food and nutrition play an important role in good health and wellbeing throughout all stages of life. An individual’s diet can contribute to quality of life, influence body weight, risk of disease and protect against infection[1].

The NNPAS collects data on food, energy and beverage intakes, along with a broad range of dietary behaviours, supplement consumption and food security status.

Physical activity and sleep

Physical activity is important for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It can take different forms, including deliberate exercise or sport, incidental movement and work-related activities[2].

Sleep is essential to supporting good health and wellbeing. Getting good sleep can contribute to healthy growth and development, aid cognitive performance and improve quality of life[3].

The NNPAS collects data on physical activity and sleep using a self-reported questionnaire and accelerometers.
