The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Energy Account, Australia (EAA) is one of the environmental-economic accounts produced by the ABS and is based on the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA). The SEEA Central Framework is an international standard that enables linkages between ABS environmental-economic accounts and other parts of the National Accounts produced by the ABS. The SEEA-Energy Manual organises energy related data and is consistent with the SEEA Central Framework.
This account is the first to produce monetary use estimates for energy products consumed by industry using the updated method adopted by the ABS in 2023. This method uses a ‘bottom-up’ approach to compile the physical supply and use tables using a combination of administrative and survey data to reflect activity at the industry level. Monetary use estimates have been derived by applying average unit price data to physical product use estimates, and new estimates are provided back to 2010-11.
Some further improvements have been incorporated into this release, including:
- an improved reconciliation of petroleum refinery inputs and use of gas by the manufacturing industry
- the assignment of transformative losses to specific industries as part of the industry net use calculation, and
- reporting of dissipative energy use as well as transformative energy use in the calculation of gross energy supply and use.
As a result, products that have been updated include, but may not be limited to: black coal, petrol and diesel, natural gas, crude oil condensates and other petroleum products. Changes will also be seen in total net use and gross use, as well as for some industry levels. Users should take this into account when referring to earlier publications.
