What is the total of all income the person usually receives?

How this variable is created

This variable is calculated by summing the personal incomes reported by all household members aged 15 years and over. As personal income is collected in ranges, a specific dollar value is assigned to each range before incomes are summed. For ranges that align with common age pension payment amounts, values reflect typical age pension rates at the time of the Census. Values for other ranges are based on median total income derived from the Person Level Integrated Data Asset (PLIDA).

Households are classified as:

  • ‘All incomes not stated’ when no member aged 15 years and over reports an income
  • ‘Partial income stated’ when at least one member does not report an income
  • ‘Partial income stated’ when at least one eligible member was away on Census night

In most cases, visitors’ incomes are excluded from total household income. The exception is households consisting entirely of visitors.

History and changes

This variable relating to household income was first used in the 1976 Census.

Values assigned to personal income ranges, used to calculate family incomes, were previously obtained from the Survey of Income and Housing. For 2026, these are based on the age pension payments amounts or derived from Person Level Integrated Data Asset (PLIDA).
