How this variable is created

Data for this variable is collected from Census questions on relationship in household and personal income. Information used to establish family structures is also collected from questions asked of people who were temporarily away from the household on Census night.

This variable is calculated by summing the personal incomes reported by all family members aged 15 years and over who were present in the household on Census night and who stated their income. As personal income is collected in ranges, a specific dollar value is assigned to each range before incomes are summed. For ranges that align with common age pension payment amounts, values reflect typical age pension rates at the time of the Census. Values for other ranges are based on median total income derived from the Person Level Integrated Data Asset (PLIDA).

Where no family member aged 15 years or over has stated their income, the family is classified as ‘All incomes not stated’.

History and changes

This variable was first introduced in the 2006 Census.

Values assigned to personal income ranges, used to calculate family incomes, were previously obtained from the Survey of Income and Housing. For 2026, these are based on the age pension payments amounts or derived from Person Level Integrated Data Asset (PLIDA).
