How this variable is created
This variable is created from responses to the sex recorded at birth and relationship in household questions on the Census form. In cases where a child is temporarily absent from the household on Census night, this information would be used to ensure the parent is in scope for this variable.
History and changes
This variable was first introduced in 2011.
In 2026, updates were made to the variable name and categories to align with updated wording of questions on the form.
