This variable describes the relationship between families in a multi family household. The variable family number (FNOF) identifies the primary family and any other families in the family household.
The variable shows the relationship between each additional family to the primary family. For example, a household may include a primary couple family with children and a second couple family. If the second family are the parents of the mother in the primary family, their relationship is coded as ‘Mother’s/father’s/parent’s family’.

This variable is derived from the relationship in household (RLHP) question on the Census form. This question identifies how people are related in a multi family household. It also includes information about people who are temporarily absent.
