How this variable is created

This variable classifies occupied private dwellings according to the Indigenous status of household members who were counted at home on Census night. It is derived from usual address indicator Census night (UAICP), Indigenous status (INGP) and household composition (HHCD). Persons temporarily absent are excluded.

The categories are defined as follows.

Household with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person(s)

  • At least one person in the household identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.

Household with non-Indigenous persons only

  • All persons in the household have a non-Indigenous Indigenous status.

Household with an Indigenous status not stated

  • No person in the household identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, and at least one person has a not stated Indigenous status.

History and changes

This variable was introduced in 2011.

In 2026, updates were made to separate households with non-Indigenous persons only from households with persons where Indigenous status was 'Not stated'.
