2025 ASCCEG Topic Consultation Collection Notice

This Collection Notice explains the collection and use of personal information as part of the first public consultation phase of the 2025 ASCCEG review process. The ABS is inviting feedback through the ABS Consultation Hub, which will be open from 9th April 2025 to 16th May 2025. This Collection Notice explains the collection and use of personal information as part of the first public consultation phase of the 2025 ASCCEG review process.

Who is collecting your personal information?

Your personal information is being collected by the ABS and ABS’s technology service provider for the consultation, Delib, who support a third party platform called Citizen Space. The Privacy Notice for the Consultation Hub explains how the ABS uses Delib and Citizen Space and how Delib will collect, safeguard, and process your data on behalf of the ABS. The ABS is the data controller and Delib is the data processor.

What personal information is collected?

For the 2025 ASCCEG review consultation, the ABS will collect and hold responses to consultation questions, including the following personal information that you provide:

  • Contact name (optional)
  • Organisation (if applicable)
  • Email address (optional)
  • Phone number (optional)
  • State (optional)
How will your personal information be managed?

The collected information will be stored in secure data centres in Australia. The hosting provider for Delib is Amazon Web Services (AWS). Delib and Citizen Space meet all Australian Government privacy and data storage requirements.

The ABS will extract your survey submission from the Consultation Hub within two months of the consultation’s close. Authorised ABS staff will store your survey submission separately in the secure ABS environment for record keeping purposes.

As the hosting provider, Delib will only access your personal information when requested to do so by the ABS, and only if necessary for the purpose of assisting with the administration of the site.

How will your submission be managed?

The ABS complies with the Privacy Act 1988 and the Archives Act 1983 in the storage, collection, access, use, disclosure, retention and destruction of your personal information.

The ABS will retain your survey submission in the secure ABS environment for record keeping purposes in accordance with the relevant Records Authority and applicable legislation.

Your full submission, including name and email address (if provided), will be stored in this environment no later than 2035. We will then remove your name and email address and store a de-identified version of your submission for record keeping purposes.

  • If you have not consented to receive email updates from the ABS regarding the ASCCEG review process, your personal information will not be stored by the ABS.
  • If you have consented to receive email updates from the ABS regarding only the 2025 ASCCEG review process, we will store your name and email address for this purpose until we notify you that the 2025 ASCCEG review has been finalised.
  • If you have consented to receive email updates from the ABS regarding future ASCCEG reviews, we will store your contact details until 2035.
  • You can revoke your consent to receive email updates at any point in time. If you revoke your consent, your personal information will be removed. You can revoke your consent to receive email updates by emailing standards@abs.gov.au
How will your submission and personal information be used?

The ABS will use your submission to inform the review of the ASCCEG. The review team may also share information with the Census team to support preparation for the 2026 Census. The ABS will not publish individual submissions from this consultation. However, the ABS will publish a summary, in the form of ‘We Asked, You Said, We Did’ on the Consultation Hub.

Contact details are voluntary for the ASCCEG consultation submissions. If provided, they will be used to allow for follow-up and future communication regarding ABS plans for the ASCCEG.

During the first consultation phase of the 2025 ASCCEG review, follow-up allows the ABS to clarify information provided, where necessary, and ensure that any negative impacts resulting from the proposed changes to the classification are minimised or mitigated.

The ABS will email updates about the 2025 ASCCEG review to those who have provided an email address during the first consultation phase.

The ABS may use your name, organisation and email address to contact you to notify you of future activities related to ASCCEG maintenance and reviews.

You can revoke your consent to receive these updates by emailing us at standards@abs.gov.au. Stakeholders who did not respond to the first consultation phase will not be contacted for any subsequent review phases.

Except for Delib in their data processing role, the ABS will not:

  • share information in a way that would identify you without your consent
  • share information with private organisations, such as direct marketing companies
  • share information with other government agencies for compliance or regulation activities

unless required or authorised by or under an Australian law.
