Trends in number of livestock slaughtered

Monthly change

Compared to February 2019 trend estimates:

  • Cattle slaughtered increased 1.2% to 708,900 head
  • Calves increased 2.4% to 47,500 head
  • Sheep increased 1.6% to 821,200 head
  • Lambs increased 1.3% to 1.98 million head
  • Pigs remained steady at 441,600 head


Yearly change

Compared to March 2018 trend estimates:
  • Cattle slaughtered increased 12.0%
  • Calves increased 42.2%
  • Sheep increased 13.3%
  • Lambs decreased 0.4%
  • Pigs decreased 2.3%


Trends in amount of red meat produced

Monthly change

Compared to February 2019 trend estimates:
  • Beef production increased 1.0% to 201,300 tonnes
  • Veal increased 3.9% to 2,200 tonnes
  • Mutton increased 2.0% to 19,600 tonnes
  • Lamb increased 1.7% to 45,500 tonnes
  • Pork decreased 0.6% to 34,100 tonnes


Yearly change

Compared to March 2018 trend estimates:
  • Beef production increased 7.1%
  • Veal increased 59.7%
  • Mutton increased 14.7%
  • Lamb increased 1.2%
  • Pork decreased 3.1%
