Metric

Self-reported measure of how workers perceive their job

Why this matters

Job satisfaction provides a measure of job quality.

The Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey collects overall job satisfaction for workers aged 15 to 64 years as a score from 0 to 10, where 0 is 'totally dissatisfied' and 10 is 'totally satisfied'.

Progress

In 2023, average job satisfaction was 7.8 out of 10, similar to the average job satisfaction score in 2022 (7.9) and slightly higher than 2003 (7.6).

  1. HILDA results are custom analysis of the HILDA survey, funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services and managed by the Melbourne Institute.

Differences across groups

In 2023, job satisfaction was:

  • similar by sex (7.8 for males and 7.9 for females)
  • similar by employment status (7.8 for casual workers and 7.8 for permanent workers)
  • slightly higher for part-time employees (7.9) than full-time employees (7.8).
