Key statistics

In September quarter 2023, there were 659,900 tourism jobs. This was:

  • 37,200 (6.0%) more jobs than June quarter 2023
  • 85,600 (14.9%) more jobs than September quarter 2022
  • 90,500 (-12.1%) less jobs than December quarter 2019, prior to COVID-19 pandemic
  • 1 in 23 (4.3%) filled jobs in the economy

During this quarter, industries with the largest quarterly changes were:

  • education and training: increase of 10,000 jobs (27.0%)
  • cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services: increase of 8,500 jobs (4.0%)
  • travel agency and information centre services: increase of 6,200 jobs (19.4%)

Comparing September quarter 2022 with September quarter 2023, industries with the largest changes were:

  • cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services: increase of 30,000 jobs (15.6%)
  • education and training: increase of 18,900 jobs (67.0%)
  • retail trade: increase of 9,100 jobs (9.6%)
