Key statistics

In March quarter 2025, there were 706,400 tourism jobs. This was:

  • 4,000 (-0.6%) less jobs than December quarter 2024
  • 20,700 (3.0%) more jobs than March quarter 2024
  • 1 in 23 (4.4%) filled jobs in the economy.

In March quarter 2025, 7 of the 12 tourism industries recorded a fall in jobs. The largest decreases were in:

  • Retail trade: down 3,500 (-2.8%)
  • Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services: down 3,000 (-1.4%)
  • Clubs, pubs, taverns and bars: down 2,500 (-5.7%)
  • Travel agency and information centre services: down 2,100 (-7.2%).

These were mostly offset by increases in:

  • Accommodation: up 4,300 (3.4%)
  • Education and training: up 3,300 (6.2%).

The 3.0% increase in jobs from March quarter 2024 to March quarter 2025 was driven by increases in 5 of the 12 tourism industries, the largest being:

  • Accommodation: up 17,700 (15.8%)
  • Education and training: up 11,300 (25.2%).

These were partially offset by decreases in:

  • Air, water and other passenger transport: down 3,200 (-9.0%)
  • Cultural services: down 2,700 (-18.6%)
  • Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services: down 2,500 (-1.2%).

The decrease in March quarter 2025 was the result of 13,200 less jobs held by females working part-time, largely offset by 8,800 more jobs held by males working part-time.

The increase from March quarter 2024 to March quarter 2025 was the result of 13,700 more jobs held by females working full-time and 5,200 more jobs held by males working part-time.
