Steps are the number of times a person takes a step while walking or running. They are a basic way to describe how much physical activity someone does each day which gives a clear and easy measure of daily movement.

In NNPAS 2023 and NATSINPAS 2023, estimates of step counts were calculated from accelerometer data using the Verisense Step Count Algorithm[1].

In the previous iteration of the NNPAS and NATSINPAS during 2011-2013, steps were measured using a hip worn pedometer. Caution should be taken when attempting to compare step counts between iterations of NNPAS and NATSINPAS due to the differences in devices and processing methods.
