How the ABS keeps your information confidential

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) must keep your information safe by law. The Census and Statistics Act 1905 (C&S Act) requires the ABS to keep your information secure and confidential. This law allows the ABS to collect the data needed to support governments and the community while ensuring your privacy. The ABS also protects your personal information under the Privacy Act 1988

We protect your information by ensuring it is:

  • securely stored
  • used only for statistical or research purposes
  • never able to be identified in published statistics
  • used anonymously for research and analysis.

Collection notices 

Our Australian Privacy Principle 5 Collection notices outline what personal information we collect, why we collect personal information, and how it is used. They are a requirement under the Privacy Act 1988 but also support our commitment to transparency.

Privacy Impact Assessments

We do Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs) to see how new or changed activities might affect your privacy. PIAs help us design systems and processes that continue to protect your information.
