How this variable is created

This variable is derived from responses to the method of travel to work question on the Census form. Responses are captured directly from mark box selections.

Respondents may select more than one method, with up to three responses retained. Where more than three methods are selected, responses are recorded in the order shown on the form, and any additional responses are not retained.

‘Did not go to work’, ‘Worked at home’, and ‘Walked only’ are treated as overriding responses. Where one of these responses is selected, it takes precedence over all other methods. If more than one of these responses is reported, a single response is recorded based on the order shown on the form.

History and changes

The question relating to method of travel to work (MTWP) was first asked in the 1976 Census.

In 2026, updates were made to include ‘e-bike’ in the question response options. Updates were made to the variable categories to reflect this change.
