Usual address one year ago indicator (UAI1P)

This variable shows whether a person: 

• lived at the same address one year ago as their current usual residence 
• lived somewhere else in Australia one year ago 
• usually lived in another country one year ago 

When used with the usual address indicator Census night (UAICP), usual address five years ago indicator (UAI5P), and place of usual residence (PURP), this variable helps to show migration patterns. 

All persons aged one year and over 

This is derived from the Census question, 'Where did the person usually live one year ago (at 11 August 2025)?' Responses are captured automatically from the mark boxes on the form. 

If the mark boxes are left blank but an address is provided, UAI1P is derived from the reported address. If neither the indicator nor the address is provided, the response is coded as ‘Not stated’. 

For people aged under 16 years (that is, under 15 years one year ago) who do not answer this question but have a parent who does, their UAI1P is set to the same value as their parent. 

The question relating to the usual address one year ago was first asked in the 1976 Census and has been asked at every Census since. 

In 2026, the years in the category labels were updated.
