How this variable is created
This variable is mainly coded from written responses to questions on qualification level and field of study. Additional information may be drawn from:
- highest year of primary or secondary school completed
- whether the person has completed any educational qualification
- whether the qualification was completed before 1998
History and changes
The main field of study question was first asked in the 1971 Census and has been included in every Census since.
In 2001, the ASCED replaced the ABS Classification of Qualifications.
In 2006, the year‑completed question was changed to ask whether the qualification was finished before 1998 or from 1998 onward. This reflects the introduction of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) in 1998. The distinction also helps code some certificates to more detailed ASCED categories.
In 2026, the question about whether a qualification was achieved before 1998 was removed from the paper form, however, where relevant will be asked on the online form. While it is still being used to derive this variable, this change may lead to a small increase in responses coded to ‘Advanced Diploma and Diploma Level, nfd’ and ‘Certificate Level, nfd’.
