In June 2025 the ABS released preliminary estimates of Labour Account data modelled by sex and age group.

From the December 2025 quarter onwards, an update to the quarterly Labour Account publication will be released a week later with additional sex and age group estimates. Multiple job-holders will also be released on the same day.

Jobs

In seasonally adjusted terms for the December quarter 2025:

  • filled jobs increased by 0.4%, following a 0.7% rise in the September quarter 2025. Filled jobs grew by 1.3% through the year
  • the number of main jobs increased by 56,400 (or 0.4%)
  • the proportion of vacant jobs decreased to 2.0%
  • the number of public sector jobs increased by 0.3%, while the number of private sector jobs increased by 0.5%.

Total jobs

In seasonally adjusted terms for the December quarter 2025, the total number of jobs increased by 55,600 (or 0.3%). This consisted of a decrease of 5,100 job vacancies and a increase of 60,700 filled jobs.

Filled jobs

In seasonally adjusted terms for the December quarter 2025, the number of filled jobs increased by 60,700 to 16.1 million.

Main and secondary jobs

In seasonally adjusted terms for the December quarter 2025:

  • main jobs increased by 56,400 (or 0.4%)
  • secondary jobs increased by 4,300 (or 0.4%)
  • the proportion of secondary jobs to filled jobs remained at 6.8%.

The three industries with the highest number of secondary jobs were Health care and social assistance, Administrative and support services, and Education and training.

Secondary jobs can be held by people who have their main job in the same or a different industry. 

Statistical discrepancy - Filled jobs

People

In seasonally adjusted terms for the December quarter 2025:

  • the total number of employed people increased by 0.7% to 15.0 million
  • the number of multiple job holders increased by 0.4%
  • unemployed people decreased by 35,500 people to 630,900.

The three industries with the highest number of employed people in the December quarter 2025 were Health care and social assistance, Retail trade, and Construction.
 

Hours

In seasonally adjusted terms for the December quarter 2025, the total number of hours actually worked increased by 45 million hours (or 0.7%) to 6.1 billion hours.

The three industries with the highest number of hours actually worked in the December quarter 2025 were Health care and social assistance, Construction, and Professional, scientific and technical services.

Payments

The Labour Account Payments quadrant presents the costs incurred by enterprises in employing labour, and the income received by people from its provision. Total income consists of compensation of employees and labour income from self-employment. The addition of other related costs to employers to total income will derive total labour costs.

In seasonally adjusted terms for the December quarter 2025:

  • total labour income increased by $4,161 million (or 1.1%) to $385,398 million
  • the average labour income per employed person increased by 0.4% to $25,648
  • total compensation of employees increased by 1.1% to $355,724 million
  • labour income from self-employment increased by 1.0% to $29,674 million
  • total labour costs increased by $4,454 million (or 1.1%) to $410,386 million.
