Secure Environment for Analysing Data (SEAD) privacy notice

Personal information the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) collects to authorise access to SEAD and administer the service

Purpose for which information is collected

To administer and provide access to SEAD, we will collect any personal information you provide when you set up an account, including your name, email address, job title and details of your organisation.

We may also collect other personal information you provide, including information you provide by email, for the purpose of supporting your use of the system.

Why we collect this information

By collecting your personal information, we can identify which organisation engaging the SEAD service (“SEAD partner”) you belong to. This will ensure you are connected to the right projects and data in SEAD and allow us to offer tailored support.

We may also use your personal information for a secondary purpose, like conducting analysis to support new product and service development, informing you of recent updates, or in accordance with a permitted exception under the Privacy Act.

Any personal information collected will be retained until it is no longer needed for these purposes and will be protected in accordance with the Privacy Act.

Who can access your personal information

Your personal information is being collected by the ABS and can be accessed by authorised representatives of the SEAD partner. All information will be stored securely by ABS cloud technology service provider Microsoft, in servers physically located exclusively in Australia, including backup servers.

Microdata contained in SEAD

The ABS enables a SEAD partner to host data according to their legislative and policy requirements, which the SEAD partner must abide by law. It is the responsibility of the SEAD partner to ensure:

  • Authorised users are aware of their obligations under the relevant legislation.
  • Use of their data in SEAD is for permitted purposes.
  • Secure transfer of their own data into and out of SEAD.
  • Exclusive control and management of their data, including input and output vetting, while using the underlying Safe settings protections provided by the ABS.

The SEAD environment is certified to handle ‘Protected’ data and is subject to a regular program of independent security audits and systems accreditations, including the Information Security Registered Assessor Program (IRAP).

Storage and security of microdata

Data remains within the secure domain of the SEAD partner, with data transfers into SEAD restricted to authorised SEAD partner administrators.

Data transferred into SEAD is securely stored in certified cloud servers. All servers, including backup servers, are located in Australia and comply with the Australian Privacy Principles and ABS legislative framework.
