The current account balance (seasonally adjusted, current price) for June quarter 2026 was a deficit of $27.2b. This was an increase in the deficit of $1.8b, from the revised March quarter 2026 current account deficit of $25.4b. 

The decrease in Australia's current account balance was led by the fall in the balance of goods and services.

The balance on goods and services deficit widened this quarter after falling into a deficit last quarter for the first time since December quarter 2017.

The balance on goods and services in seasonally adjusted chain volume terms is expected to contribute 0.1 percentage points to the June quarter 2026 GDP quarterly movement.

The terms of trade decreased 1.6% to 94.8, down from 96.3 in March quarter 2026.

The net primary income deficit was $21,863m, a decrease of $83m from the revised March quarter 2026 deficit of $21,946m.

Australia's net international investment liability position was $638.9b at 30 June 2026, a decrease of $122.8b on the revised March quarter 2026 position of $761.7b.

Balance on goods and services

In seasonally adjusted chain volume terms, the balance on goods and services was a surplus of $4,264m, a rise of $692m on the revised March quarter 2026 surplus of $3,572m.

In seasonally adjusted current price terms, goods credits rose $5,144m (3.9%) to $138,091m, with volumes up 1.4% and prices up 2.4%.

Income

Net primary income deficit decreased by $83m to $21,863m in the June quarter 2026.

Primary income credits

Primary income credits, in seasonally adjusted, current price terms rose $1,172m (4.0%). The key components contributing to the increase were:

  • Portfolio investment assets - interest; up $674m (11.5%)
  • Portfolio investment assets - income on equity and investment fund shares; up $148m (1.4%)
  • Other investment assets; up $125m (8.0%)
  • Direct investment assets - income on equity and investment fund shares; up $94m (0.9%)
  • Direct investment assets - interest; up $91m (29.5%)

Primary income debits

Primary income debits, in seasonally adjusted, current price terms rose $1,088m (2.1%). The key components contributing to the increase were:

  • Portfolio investment liabilities - interest; up $990m (5.9%)
  • Direct investment liabilities - interest; up $68m (12.6%)
  • Other investment liabilities; up $61m (2.0%)

Partly offset by:

  • Compensation of employees; down $38m (-0.7%)

Secondary income

In current price seasonally adjusted terms, the net secondary income deficit narrowed to $253m from a revised $590m deficit in the March quarter 2026. 

Secondary income debits fell $269m (6.2%) while credits rose $69m (1.8%) in the June quarter 2026.

Capital and Financial Account

The capital and financial account recorded a surplus of $5.3b during the June 2026 quarter, driven by the financial account surplus of $7.6b.

The financial account recorded a surplus due to a $38.9b net outflow of equity and a $46.5b net inflow of debt.

International Investment Position

Australia's international investment liability position was $638.9b at 30 June 2026, a decrease of $122.8b on the revised 31 March 2026 figure of $761.7b. Australia's net foreign equity asset position increased $186.1b to $847.1b and Australia's net foreign debt liability position increased $63.3b to $1,486.0b.
