70 Census Collectors hit the Hawkesbury

29 July 2011 | NSW/44

70 Census Collectors will hit the streets and waterways of the Hawkesbury today to deliver Census forms to every home, campsite, houseboat and caravan, ahead of Census night on Tuesday, 9 August.

Sandra Jungfleisch has been working on Census collections across Sydney since 1981, first as a Census Collector and then as an Area Supervisor, but 2011 is her first Census in the Hawkesbury region.

“The thing you learn about Sydney from working on the Census is how different it can be from one place to another, both in terms of landscape and population diversity," Sandra says.

This year, Sandra’s territory takes in the eastern side of Mt Ku-ring-gai, Cowan, Danger Island and the homes along the Hawkesbury River itself.

“Some of my Collectors need boats. They need to know this area extremely well, as it’s not simply a matter of following a street directory.

“We’ve got the houseboat occupants who live on the water around Brooklyn and recreational boat people who are anchored up or down river.

“Mission Island is also interesting as school groups will be using it as an overnight campsite on Census night, so we will need to deliver Census forms to them by water taxi," Sandra says.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics is partnering with a local Homeless Hub in St Matthew's Anglican Church, Windsor on 4 August where people experiencing homelessness will be counted.

“I am also having discussions with the National Parks & Wildlife, local police and the Community Health Centre in Brooklyn to get a proper handle on how many homeless people there are in the region and where they are to ensure they are accurately counted," Sandra adds.
