Thank you Australia for shedding some light on Census night

11 August 2011 | CO/47

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) thanks Australia for participating in the Census.

Last night more than two million households in Australia completed the Census online using the eCensus option.

Head of the Population Census program, Paul Lowe says it’s a massive jump from 2006.

“We're on track to have 30 per cent of the population completing the eCensus. It’s brilliant that so many Australians choose to complete the Census online,” Mr Lowe says.

Census Collectors won’t return to the homes of Australians who choose to submit their information via eCensus.

Mr Lowe says Census Collectors will start returning to collect Census forms from today, so have your completed form ready.

It’s not too late to help the ABS shed some light on Census night and complete the Census, and the eCensus is still available.

“The eCensus website will remain open until 5 September.”

“If you haven’t completed your form yet, then it’s not too late for you and your family to be counted, and it is compulsory,” Mr Lowe added.

If you haven’t received a Census form or need an eCensus you can request one at www.abs.gov.au/census

The first results of the Census will be released in June 2012. The Census collects vital information about the population to help plan for services and infrastructure in all communities.

More information is available online at www.abs.gov.au/census or call the Census Inquiry Service on 1300 338 776.

Key Census dates:

  • 9 August 2011 – Census night.
  • From 10 August – Collection of Census forms.
