Beware of bogus Census Collectors

15 August 2011 | VIC/36

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is warning Victorian residents to be aware of bogus Census Collectors.

All genuine ABS Census Collectors will be wearing visible photo identification and carrying highly visible yellow satchels when they collect completed Census forms.

Victorian Census Director, Sam Thomas says Census Collectors will never telephone or email households and ask questions about personal information.

“Householders should request to see a Census Collector’s photo identification. If they are not able to provide it, they are not employed by the ABS so you should not give them your Census form or any other personal information,” Mr Thomas says.

Anyone who suspects they have been a victim of someone impersonating a Census Collector should report it to their local police.

If you haven’t already completed your form, it is compulsory, so join the rest of Australia and shed some light on who we are.
