Melbourne revealed as 2011 Census data is released

21 June 2012 | VIC/44

The changing face of Melbourne was revealed today as the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) released the first results of the 2011 Census of Population and Housing.

The results show that the new Census population of Greater Melbourne is 3,999,982, up from 3,647,021 in 2006 – an increase of 9.7 per cent.

The data also shows that the local government area with the biggest growth in Greater Melbourne is Wyndham, which now has 161,577 people up from 112,696 in 2006 – a rise of 43.4 per cent.

Wyndham is also proportionately the fastest growing local government area in Greater Melbourne.

Housing in Greater Melbourne has also seen some significant changes over the past five years with median household weekly rents up to $300 from $200 in 2006, an increase of 50 per cent. Median monthly household mortgage repayments also increased to $1,811 from $1,343 in 2006, an increase of 34.8 per cent.

Victorian Census Director, Sam Thomas, said the 2011 Census was a great success and the results released today will help shape the future of Australia over the next five years.

“Census information is used to allocate government funding for all areas of Australia, including Melbourne, and to plan vital services and infrastructure that we all use in our communities every day,” Mr Thomas said.

“The Census provides a snapshot of the city, including data on topics such as age, education, income, housing, transport, religion, ethnicity and more.”

Mr Thomas added that Australia’s richest source of statistical information is now available freely online.

“Census data is available for free on the ABS website, where you can find new, easy-to-use tools, including QuickStats, that make searching Census data quick and easy.”
