60 Census Collectors hit the roads of Broken Hill29 July 2011 | NSW/5660 Census Collectors will hit the roads of Broken Hill today to deliver Census forms to every home, hotel and farm in the area and ensure every person is accurately counted on Census night, Tuesday, 9 August. Census veteran Carol Roland is managing a team of seven Collectors responsible for the Census count in Broken Hill and Broken Hill West. Carol has been working on the Census since 1971, twice as a Collector, and this, her fourth time, as an Area Supervisor. "I’m really excited to be back again. I love working on the Census. Where would we be without it?" Carol says. "Census information plays a vital role in helping the authorities accurately plan for our region’s future. “Over the past decade a lot of people thought the population around here was declining but in fact many people are moving back to Broken Hill. “This Census will give a true picture of who we are as a region and what services and facilities we need." As a local, Carol can see how housing is changing, particularly around the town centre, which poses new challenges for this Census. “There are lots of flats now and people living above shops. If there are people living there, we will be making sure they receive a form. “I’m also in close dialogue with the local police and the Salvation Army to identify where those without a fixed address may be on Census night. "It’s important that we are able to count everyone, including those experiencing homelessness. This is why we offer lots of assistance to those that need it," Carol adds.
