South Sudan recognised on the Australian Census5 August 2011 | VIC/32Last month South Sudan was recognised as an independent country and the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is pleased to announce that South Sudan will formally be recognised in this year's Census count on Tuesday 9 August. Victoria Census Director, Sam Thomas says he’s thrilled that South Sudan will be recognised on the Census. “Australia truly is a multicultural country and we believe in recognising everyone who is in Australia on Census night. Today we are pleased to announce that South Sudan will officially be recognised in the 2011 Census count,." Mr Thomas says. “The ABS has worked very hard to ensure the world’s newest country can be officially recognised in the 2011 Census outputs." Mr Thomas says persons who identify as being South Sudanese can indicate this on their Census form under the ‘Ancestry’ and ‘Country of birth’ questions. "It’s important we capture an accurate snapshot of all Australians and their countries of origin so that services can be planned for and provided in the right areas."
