Census job opportunities in Western and South Australia

06 May 2014

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has announced the creation of 400 short-term jobs in regional Australia, to support a Census field test in the lead up to the 2016 Census of Population and Housing.

Census Field Officers play a critical role in the quality and accuracy of the data collected in the Census. In 2016, field staff will perform a different role than they have traditionally played in the Census, but they will be just as important.

The ABS is changing the way it conducts the Census in 2016, with more than 65 per cent of households expected to participate online. The ABS will be using more technology in the 2016 Census, and as a result, Census field staff will too.

Census Field Officers are required for non-office roles between July and September 2014. These jobs require work in urban and rural communities of Australia. Census Field Officers will deliver Census materials, conduct personal interviews and make follow-up house calls.

Around 400 Census Field Officers will be hired, throughout Western and South Australia with more than 40 Area Supervisors about to commence work in these locations.

Census Field Officers earn $20.29 (including casual loading) per hour, plus allowances.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, be an Australian citizen, and able to commit between 20 to 30 hours a week, including days, evenings, weekends and holidays as required. They will need a driver’s licence and access to a vehicle in some areas.

Applicants must be computer literate and ideally have a home computer with access to the internet. The ability to supply a smartphone or tablet device is also highly desirable.

Applicant Information Kits are available from the ABS website, and candidates can apply online.

If you recently applied for an Area Supervisor role, and expressed interest in a Field Officer role, you do not need to apply.

Important dates:
  • Field Officer positions open – 5 May 2014
  • Field Officer positions close – 30 May 2014.
