250 Census Collectors hit the streets of Blacktown

29 July 2011 | NSW/42

250 Census Collectors will hit the streets of Blacktown today to deliver Census forms to every home, caravan and apartment block in the area and ensure every person is accurately counted on Census night, Tuesday, 9 August.

Hayley Meyer-Greaves, a 29 year-old mother of one is a local Blacktown Area Supervisor overseeing a team of eight local Census Collectors.

“Many people in my patch have lived here for 45 years or more, from the time when it was all dirt roads. Even the so-called new housing estate, Huntington, has been here for 20 years, so it’s all pretty well established,” Hayley says.

In 2006, Hayley was a Census Collector and last year she was again selected to work as a Collector on the test Census in Blacktown.

“We did a trial run to iron out any bugs and test new procedures. It was great work experience for my current role as an Area Supervisor."

Having moved to Blacktown from the North Shore five years ago, it didn’t take Hayley long to fall in love with her new surrounds.

“I like that Blacktown is truly a multicultural community, people from all over the world call Blacktown their home – Islanders, Indians, Middle Eastern - we’re all here.

“We have a lot of services and a great Council. The parks, the swimming centre and good transport plus it’s nice and clean, we are very lucky.”

This year’s Census will be the second time people can complete the Census online using the eCensus.

“I will be highlighting the eCensus to everyone and I think once people realise how easy it is, it’ll really take off. We do everything else on computer these days, why not the Census?”
