Jobs

During the year ending February 2023:

• Job mobility remained at 9.5% for a second year in a row, the highest rate in a decade.
• The share of job mobility remained highest for Professionals, at 24% of those who changed jobs.
• 2.3 million people left or lost a job.
• The annual retrenchment rate was 1.4%, the lowest annual rate on record (since 1972).

Seasonally adjusted estimates for May 2023:

• Total job vacancies were 431,600, a decrease of 2.0% from February 2023.
• Private sector vacancies were 384,600, a decrease of 2.3% from February 2023.
• Public sector vacancies were 47,000, an increase of 0.3% from February 2023.

During 2019-20 there were:

• 20.0 million job relationships, down 0.7% on 2018-19
• 14.3 million employed persons, up 1.1% on 2018-19

In June 2023:

• There were 958,600 multiple job-holders (6.7% of employed people).
• 7.6% of employed women were multiple job-holders, compared to 5.7% of employed men.
• Young workers were most likely to be working multiple jobs (8.2% of 20-24 year olds and 8.0% of 15-19 year olds).
• People who were a Community and personal service worker in their main job were most likely to be a multiple job-holder (10.6%).

Payroll jobs:

• up 0.3% in the fortnight up to 27 November 2021
• up 0.5% in the previous fortnight (to 13 November 2021)

In the week ending 12 August 2023, payroll jobs:

• decreased 0.1% in the month since 15 July 2023
• increased 2.9% in the year since 13 August 2022
