Key statistics

In June 2025, total wages and salaries paid by employers:

  • increased to $103,918 million
  • increased by 1.5% or $1,535 million in the month from May 2025
  • increased by 5.9% or $5,788 million in the year from June 2024

As a measure of aggregate earnings, estimates presented in this release include compositional changes in the labour market, which are described in more detail in Factors affecting interpretation

In June 2025, total wages and salaries paid by employers increased in 7 of 8 states and territories from May 2025.

  • New South Wales saw the largest increase of $548m (+1.6%)
  • Australian Capital Territory saw the only decrease of $54m (-1.8%)

Industry

In June 2025, total wages and salaries paid by employers increased in 17 of 19 industries from May 2025.

  • Professional, scientific and technical services saw the largest increase of $396m (+3.6%)
  • Agriculture, forestry and fishing saw the largest decrease of $5m (-0.4%)

Future changes in this release

New employee jobs measure in 2026

In July 2025, the ABS retired the Payroll Jobs release as part of its transition to release a new monthly employee jobs measure from February 2026, in the Monthly Employee Earnings Indicator.

The new monthly employee jobs measure will provide new and complementary labour market insights into jobs growth and the composition of total wages and salaries paid by employers each month. 

Methodology

Scope

This release presents experimental estimates of wages and salaries paid by active employing businesses and organisations to their employees in the Australian economy.

Source

Australian Tax Office (ATO) Single Touch Payroll (STP) administrative data combined with ABS Business Register data.

Collection method

The ATO provides selected employer and employee level data from the STP system to the ABS. These data are combined with employer population and characteristics data from quarterly ABS Business Register snapshots.

Concepts, sources and methods

Wages and salaries are gross values (prior to taxation and deductions) and include wages, salary payments and allowances paid through Australian payrolls.

Employee superannuation and severance and termination payments are excluded.
